Teversal 3-4 AFC Emley
Emley got back to winning ways with an entertaining 4-3 win over Teversal following on from a string of 4 consecutive defeats.  Amazingly this is the 4th consecutive occaision that Emley have put 4 goals past Teversal.  Last season they ran out 4-2 winners in both meetings and when the sides met in November Emley recorded a 4-0 victory.

Emley's goals came from Craig Marsh (2), Steve Kenworthy and a Mark Stuart penalty.  Kenworthy now has 20 goals to his credit this season.

Teversal v AFC Emley
Saturday 13th March 3.00pm
Emley travel to Nottinghamshire based Teversal on Saturday (kick off 3.00pm) hoping to end a run of four defeats.  Despite putting in a strong performance at NCEL Premier side Hallam on Tuesday evening they bowed out of the Sheffield Senior Cup and Ian Banks will be looking for his side to put in the same workrate and effort on Saturday.

Emley are currently 5th in the table and have slipped off the promotion pace.  To have any realistic chance of promotion they must look to take maximum points from their remaining fixtures and hope that some of their rivals slip up along the way.

Teversal meanwhile are in 12th spot after a mixed run of results – they did however hold league leaders Brighouse to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday ending their run of 11 consecutive victories.
The two sides last met back in November at the Welfare Ground and Emley ran out comfortable 4-0 winners.

Since then Teversal have brought in a new management team with ex England international Chris Waddle also providing them with some moral boosting coaching sessions.

Emley’s leading scorer Steve Kenworthy picked up a knee injury at Hallam and is a doubt for the game.  Fellow striker Lee Hill also picked up a knock but should be fit. Mick Amos is back in the reckoning after missing the last 3 games. Banks has put 7 days notice in on another striker to add to his squad but this is unlikely to be confirmed until after the weekend.

SQUAD:
Clark, Joice, Leech, Marsh, Hazelden, Amos, Stuart, Shooter, Townsend, Hill, Shooter, Ingham, Reid, Kenworthy, Garside, Wilkinson.

Emley Bow Out of the County Cup

Emley put in a respectable performance against higher league opposition tonight in the Sheffield and Hallamshire Cup. Craig Marsh levelled the score, but Hallam went on to win the fixture despite Emley creating the better of the opportinuties in the second half. A good performance for the villagers who should take heart from the performance.

Hallam v AFC Emley
Sheffield Cup Quarter Final - Tonight 7.45pm
Emley have a tough Sheffield Cup quarter final on Tuesday night (7.45pm) when they travel to NCEL Premier side Hallam.  The game is to be played at Hallam’s Sandygate ground – officially the oldest football ground in the world.

Emley will be looking to progress to the semi finals of the competition for the first time in their short 5 year history with a place in the final at Hillsborough being the ultimate goal.  They progressed to the quarter finals with a terrific 2-1 victory over Unibond League side Worksop Town.

Manager Ian Banks is hoping that his side can turn round a poor run of results that has seen them suffer 3 league defeats on the trot after getting within a point of top spot.  “
It hurts and everyone is disappointed because we have done so well and the expectation level rises.  We should not forget what has got us success, so onwards and upwards now.  We are desperate not to finish the season empty handed so we will be going all out for a result at Hallam”.

Banks is hoping to have Lee Hill back in the starting line up after he missed the last two games through injury but Simon Wright has been recalled by Rainworth after his loan spell.  Craig Wilkinson is cup tied after already playing for Worsborough in the competition.

SQUAD:
Clarke, Joice, Leech, Marsh, Shooter, Hazelden, J Wright, Townsend, Stuart, Kenworthy, Garside, Reid, Ingham, Hill.

AFC Emley v Hemsworth MW Saturday 6th March - Kick off 3.00pm

Emley's run of poor results continued with a 2 -1 defeat at the Welfare Ground. Hemsworth pounced on 2 defensive errors to lead at half time. Ian Banks changed his formation for the second period. With Craig Marsh playing upfront Emley were much more competitive. Kenworthy grabbed a goal, which made for an interesting closing 15. Both teams were reduced to 10 men in the second half.

Emley now face a visit to Hallam on Tuesday in the Sheffield and Hallamshire Cup.

05/03/10
AFC Emley v Hemsworth MW
Saturday 6th March - Kick off 3.00pm
Emley are back in action on Saturday against Hemsworth as they look to turn round the form that has seen them fall to two consecutive league defeats for the first time this season.  The defeats at the hand of form teams Brighouse and Pontefract leave Emley in 5th place and off the pace for the two promotion places.

Hemsworth will provide tough opponents - after a tricky start to the season which saw them bottom of the league at one point they are now up to 6th place in the table, 1 place and 4 points behind Emley.  They come into this game on the back of 4 wins in the last 5 games scoring 17 goals in the process (most notably a 7-0 win at strugglers Grimsby on Tuesday night).

Emley assistant manager Grant Crookes is confident that his team can turn the form around.  "We didn't become a bad team overnight and need to continue believing in ourselves.  Promotion is still in sight, however it is a long shot.  There will be a few twists and turns in the last few weeks of the season and we need to keep plugging away."

Mick Amos is again unavailable and Lee Hill still struggling with injury.  Simon Wright is back in the squad after missing on Wednesday.

Squad:
Clark, Joice, Leech, J. Wright, S. Wright, Marsh, Hazelden, Stuart, Smith, Ingham, Townsend, Wilkinson, Hill, Kenworthy, Shooter, Garside.

03/03/10
AFC Emley 1-3 Pontefract Collieries
Emley slumped to their second defeat in as many games and lost vital ground on their promotion rivals who have all recorded victories in midweek.

The home side started the game brightly playing incisive attacking football and were soon in the lead as Mark Stuart converted a penalty after a handball in the 2nd minute of the game.  They continued to apply the pressure and Steve Kenworthy was twice denied by the Ponte keeper Rob Poulter when one on on.

Collieries fought their way back into the game and had an effort cleared of the line by Josh Ingham before grabbing an equaliser through Carl Fothergill who struck a powerful shot from the edge of the box leaving Mick Clarke with no chance.  10 minutes later the took the lead as Scott Sommerville took advantage of a defensive error.

Emley created chances to get back into the game and had plenty of posession in the second half but were guilty of not delivering enough quality in the final third of the field.  Pontefract put the game out of reach midway through the second half with Craig Stevens applying the final touch from close range much to the frustration of the Emley defence who felt that the player was in an offside position.  Mick Clark picked up a yellow card for his protests.

The two defeats mean that the odds are now stacked firmly against Emley gaining promotion to the top flight of the NCEL.  Emley will now need to rely upon their rivals slipping up in the final run in.

Emley have a quick chance to bounce back when they entertain Hemsworth MW at the Welfare Ground this Saturday (3.00pm).  Hemsworth are currently sixth in the table, a place and 4 points behind Emley.  They recorded a crushing 7-0 victory over strugglers Grimsby on  Tuesday evening.

03/03/10
AFC Emley v Pontefract Collieries
Tonight - Kick Off 7.45pm
Emley manager Ian Banks faces a selection headache on Wednesday when his side take on Pontefract Collieries when his side aim to bounce back from their weekend defeat at Brighouse (kick off 7.45pm).

A physical game on a heavy pitch left Emley 6 points behind the leaders and with injuries to key players Lee Hill and Mark Townsend.  Hill is likely to be out for the game with a recurrence of a thigh strain whilst Townsend suffered a shoulder injury (although an x-ray revealed no break or dislocation).  Emley are also without Mick Amos, Simon Wright and Josh Wright who are all unavailable for the game.

Banks is making moves to strengthen his side for the final run in and is hoping to confirm the signing of ex-Town player Steve Smith before the fixture.  Smith can operate out on the wing and in the centre of midfield and has experience playing for a number of Unibond League sides including Ossett Albion, Stalybridge, Mossley and the old Emley FC.

Emley’s defeat at Brighouse was their first in the league since November and they will be looking to regain the form that has put them in 3rd place and in contention for promotion.  Visitors Pontefract have been frustrated by a string of postponements leaving them 9th in the table.  When the two sides met back in January Emley ran out 3-1 victors with 2 goals for Lee Hill and one for Steven Kenworthy.

Squad:
Clarke, Joice, Leech, Marsh, Hazelden, Ingham, Townsend, Shooter, Stuart, Kenworthy, Reid, Garside, Lavery, Wilkinson.

27/02/10
Leaders prove too strong for Emley
NCEL division one leaders Brighouse Town proved too strong AFC Emley as they slipped to a 3-0 defeat - their heaviest in the league this season.  Emley were left to rue a string of miss chances in the first half and were punished by a lethal Brighouse side who have now won their last 9 games.

Steve Kenworthy rounded the Brighouse keeper in the opening seconds of the game only to have his shot cleared off the line - this being the first of many chances as the visitors applied the pressure and dominated the first half.

It was Brighouse however who made the breakthrough when the prolific Danny Toronczac headed home just before half time.  This knocked the stuffing out of Emley who then could not find the creativity that they showed earlier in the game as Brighouse took a firm grip on the second half of the game.

The home side added two more goals and Emley keeper Mick Clarke pulled of a couple of excellent saves but in truth not even the most partisan of Emley supporters would begrudge Brighouse their position at the top of the table.

Full match report to follow.

Brighouse Town v AFC Emley
Saturday 27th February 2010 - Match Preview

Whilst most of the footballing talk will be about Town v Leeds this weekend there is another massive local derby at the other end of the football pyramid when AFC Emley visit Brighouse Town (kick off 3.00pm).  In an attempt to attract more fans to the game Brighouse are offering half price entry to Town and Leeds fans who produce a ticket stub or season ticket.

There is lots at stake for both sides as they attempt to gain promotion to the NCEL Premier.  Brighouse currently top the table on 48 points, 3 points ahead of 3rd placed Emley who do have 2 games in hand.

When the sides met back in December Emley recorded a 2-1 victory after coming back from a goal down.  Since then Brighouse have won an impressive 8 league games on the trot which has propelled them to the top of the table.  Emley also have an impressive record at the moment and are unbeaten in 9 games.

The teams also met back in January in the league cup, playing out a thrilling 3-3 draw with Emley eventually being victorious on penalties.  Speaking ahead of the game Emley’s assistant manager Grant Crookes is well aware of the threat that Brighouse pose.

“We have played them twice in the last 3 months and know that they are a well motivated side who play quick attacking football so we will not be taking the task lightly.  If we play to the best of our abilities we are confident that we can beat them.”

Emley go into the fixture without two of their key players.  Central defender Craig Marsh is suspended for one game and Josh Wright is unavailable.

Squad:

Clark, Ingham, Leech, S. Wright, Stuart, Hill, Joice, Hazelden, Townsend, Shooter, Amos, Garside, Kenworthy, Reid, Wilkinson.

Meanwhile Emley have recieved a home draw against NCEL Premier side Pickering Town in the 4th round of the League Cup.  A date is yet to be set for the fixture.

Gage Returns to Tevvie
Oliver Gage has left Emley to return to his former club Terversal.  Utility player figured in many of Emleys games earlier in the season but lost his place through injury back in October.  Since regaining his fitness he has found his opportunities in the first team limited.  The club management, players and officials thank him for his contributions and wish him all the best at Teversal.

Reserve Game Off
Emley reserves will be denied the opportunity to get back to winning ways after Friday nights scheduled clash with Storthes Hall has been postponed. Darren Hepworth's team suffered their second defeat of the season on Saturday at Campion.  They are currently second in the table behind Bay Reserves.  Their next fixture is scheduled for Friday 12th March against Crag Road at the Welfare Ground.

Todays Match Postponed
Todays game has been postponed by the match ref.  The pitch is 97% clear but frozen along the top touchline where the linesman would run.

AFC Emley v Rossington Main Match Preview
NCEL  Division One  - Saturday 20th February 2010
Second placed AFC Emley go into saturday's clash at home with Rossington Main (3.00pm kick off) looking to extend their unbeaten run to 10 games.

When the clubs last met back in October Emley ran out 4-2 winners with Lee Hill grabbing a hat trick.  Since then Rossington have experience mixed form including a crushing 9-0 defeat against Leeds and convincing victories over Askern and Staveley, leaving them in 12th position.  Manager Ian Banks will not be taking his opponents for granted:

"I honestly can’t believe that Rossington are in the position that they are.  Take it from me they are a good footballing side and have some very good individuals.  We will not be taking league positions for granted and I promise that we will be up for the challenge".

Banks' men put in a fine performance on Monday at league leaders Leeds Carnegie to force a 2-2 draw which keeps them just a point behind the leaders.  Banks is looking for another big performace from his players to maintain their push for promotion.

"I thought it was a terrific game and a credit to both teams and the league.  You could go and see teams in higher leagues and not witness the sort of football that was played.   At the end of the game I could see the pain in their faces, they gave Emley their all".

Banks also paid tribute to the clubs loyal fans who made the trip to Leeds:  "When we scored our 2nd against Leeds they nearly took the roof off the stand.  We need them to keep getting behind the boys and urge us on especially on the occaisions when things aren't going to plan".

Central defender Craig Marsh misses Saturday's game through suspension.  Lee Hill and Wayne Shooter both picked up injuries against Leeds but are named in Banks' squad.  Mark Townsend and Simon Wright are both back in the squad after missing on monday night and striker Craig Wilkinson is also back in contention.

Squad:
Clarke, Joice, S. Wright, Leech, Hazelden, J. Wright, Shooter, Ingham, Townsend, Wilkinson, Kenworthy, Stuart, Hill, Garside, Amos.

Emleys second XI are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Manningham based Campion (kick off 2.30pm).  Their hosts are 5th in the table whilst Emley are in 2nd place, 2 points behind Bay reserves.

15/02/10
Leeds Carnegie 2-2 AFC Emley
NCEL Division One
Final Score:  Leeds Carnegie 2 - 2  AFC Emley

Absolute cracker of a game and whilst Emley will be gutted that they didn't win after hitting the bar on three occaisions this is a result that they can be proud of.

Emley just edged the posession in the opening exchanges and came close to scoring when Max Joices speculative shot hit the bar with Mick Amos unable to steer the rebound home.  On 23 minutes Amos did manage to get on the scoresheet after Steve Kenworthy stretched the Carnegie defence and played a sweet ball accross the 6 yard box for Amos to stab home despite the keeper Wiacek's attempts to keep it out.  Amos then nearly doubled the lead with a well struck shot from the edge of the box with the keeper well beaten it clipped the bar and went over.

Leeds played some incisive attacking football and seized upon a defensive error back as Marco equalised on 35 minutes.   Both sides had further opportunities but went into the break on level pegging at 1-1.

The second half continued in much the same vein as the second ended with both sides again playing attractive attacking football despite the heavy rain pouring down.

Carnegie went into the lead on 62 minutes after Tom Leaver hit a well struck shot past Mick Clark and then pushed on to try and put the game out of sight.  Clark made some vital saves as Emley's defence held firm with Sean Hazelden and Anthony Leech also helping him out by making some tremendous challenges to snuff out the attacking threat.

There was plenty of action down the other end of the pitch too as Wiacek was also called upon to deny Emley's frontline.  Amos hit the bar again from about 25 yards out and before Emley forced their equaliser.  Steve Kenworthy was the provider again as he raced into the box through the Leeds defence to be brought down for a penalty.  Mark Stuart made no mistake from the spot on 77 minutes sending the keeper the wrong way with a confident strike.

Emley pushed hard to grab a winner but to no avail and stay in 2nd place behind Leeds.  They are in action again on Saturday when they entertain Rossington Main at the Welfare Ground (3.00pm kick off).  Full match report to follow from Martin later.

13/02/10
Leeds Carnegie v AFC Emley
Monday 15th February 2010 - NCEL Division One

It's first against second on monday night when AFC Emley visit league leaders Leeds Carnegie at Farsley Celtic's Throstle Nest Ground (Kick Off 7.45pm).

Ian Bank's men go into the fixture knowing that a victory will allow them to leapfrog their hosts to the top of the table.  Emley are enjoying decent form and are unbeaten in their last games whilst Leeds have lost their last two games after a run of 14 unbeaten games.  ]

Neither side had a game on Saturday but in the other fixtures Brighouse and Tadcaster made ground on the top two recording victories over Grimsby and Askern respectively whilst Staveley dropped to 5th after losing at Hemsworth.

The last time the two sides met was at the Welfare Ground back in October and the honours were even with a 1-1 draw after Josh Wright had put Emley in front.  Leeds have a reputation for playing some of the best football in the league and this was in evidence in this fixture.

They are also the leagues leading scorers with 58 goals and their Nigerian striker Chibuzor Chilaka has 12 goals to his name so far this time out.  Emley's own Steve Kenworthy also has 12 league goals and 18 in all competitions putting him top of the league scoring charts.

Inspirational midfielder Marc Townsend and Simon Wright are both unavailable due to work comitments.  Josh Ingham and Max Joice return to the side after missing the 3-0 victory over Worsborough on Wednesday evening.

Squad:

Clark, Leech, Joice, Marsh, Hazelden, Stuart, Hill, J Wright, Amos, Kenworthy, Ingham, Garside, Shooter, Reid.

12/02/10
AFC Emley Res 5 - 2 Morley Town
WRCL Div 2
Emley's second string moved up to top spot in the league with a convincing 5-2 victory over bottom club Morley Town.  The spell at the top maybe shortlived however as Bay are away at Campion and Westbrook YMCA visit Golcar on Saturday and both sides can go ahead of Emley if they win their fixtures.

Rob Day grabbed 4 of the goals and Gav Garside the other after the scores were level at one apiece at half time.

10/02/10
AFC Emley 3 - 0 Worsborough Bridge Athletic
NCEL Division One
Emley moved to within a point of league leaders Leeds Carnegie with a comfortable win over local rivals Worsborough Bridge.  The result means Emley have now gone 8 games unbeaten and gives them a real incentive when the top two sides meet on Monday.

Captain Steve Kenworthy lead by example for Emley and finished well twice to put Emley firmly in command and 2-0 up at half time.  The goals move Kenworthy to the top of the leagues scoring charts.

Emley dominated the proceedings in the second half with Lee Hill adding a third goal by rounding the Bridge 'keeper.  In truth Emley had the opportunities to win by a much larger margin with Hill, Kenworthy and sub Gareth Garside all going close.

Ian Banks will be looking for his side to continue this excellent run on Monday evening at Leeds.  Emley's first team have no fixture this Saturday but the reserves are in action on Friday evening when the entertain bottom side Morley Town (Kick off 7.30pm).

09/02/10
AFC Emley v Worsborough Bridge Athletic
NCEL Division One - Wednesday 10th February (Kick Off 7.45pm)

Emley host their local rivals Worsborough Bridge at the Welfare Ground on Wednesday (Kick Off 7.45pm) in a NCEL clash rearranged from Boxing Day.  Manager Ian Banks is keen for his side to make amends for 2 consecutive draws when his side dominated their opposition.

On Saturday, 2 placed Emley scraped a 2-2 draw against bottom side Eccleshill after being two goals down at half time.  Whilst disappointed with the result Banks was enthused by the way that his side responded in the second half.  “ We had too many players who did not perform to the best of their ability on Saturday although we dominated the game and created plenty of chances.  We showed great spirit to come back from 2 goals down, Josh Ingham came on as sub and scored a superb goal after great work from Steven Kenworthy and Max Joice was outstanding.”

Despite losing ground in the title race Banks is still confident that his side has got what it takes.  “People will say: ‘the cracks are starting to show’ but we will stick together.  We are unbeaten in 7 league games, unbeaten at home all season and still 2nd in the league table.  There are a lot of games to be played between now and the end of the season but one thing that I will promise is that we will work our socks off until the last ball is kicked and we are committed to our cause.”

Banks is without Joice and Ingham for the fixture but Simon Wright and Mark Stuart are back in the side after missing on Saturday.

Worsborough are enduring a difficult season and are second from bottom of the table but recorded an impressive 3-1 victory over Hemsworth on Saturday.  They are managed by the experienced (and ex – Wakefield and Emley player) Mick Norbury.  The sides met back in August before Norbury took over the reigns with Emley recording a comfortable 3-0 win capped by two long range strikes from Dean Sidebottom.

SQUAD:

Clarke, Leech, S Wright, Marsh, Hazelden, Stuart, Townsend, Hill, J. Wright, Shooter, Amos, Kenworthy, Garside, Reid

06/02/10
AFC Emley 2 - 2 Eccleshill United
NCEL Division One - Match Summary
Emley were held to a frustrating 2-2 draw by bottom club NCEL bottom club Eccleshill.  The match was played in heavy fog which made visibility for both fans and players difficult.

The visitors who appear revitalised by the appointment of their new manager Mark Senior battled hard and almost pulled off a shock victory having lead 2-0 at half time.  After soaking up pressure from the home side Eccleshill hit Emley on the break as Max Joice appeared to be fouled in the run up before beating Clarke with a long range effort.  Their lead was doubled soon after this time from close range after Clarke had done well to tip a shot onto the post.

Eccleshill were content to sit back and defend their lead in the second half as Emley pushed hard to get back in the game but for the second game running they lacked a clinical edge.  Josh Ingham, on as a substitute finally made the breakthrough drilling home from the edge of the six yard box after good work by Steven Kenworthy.  It was Kenworthy who eventually rescued Emley as he looped a header over the Eccleshill keeper as the game went into injury time.

Manager Ian Banks will most certainly see this as two vital points lost and will be looking for a much better performance when his side entertain Worsborough Bridge on Wednesday (7.45pm).

05/02/10
AFC Emley v Eccleshill United Match Preview
Saturday 6th February - Kick Off 3.00pm
AFC Emley entertain NCEL basement side Eccleshill United at the Welfare Ground on Saturday (3.00pm), looking to extend their unbeaten run to 7 games.  Ian Banks’ side are currently 2nd in the table and have recorded 5 wins and a draw in their last six games – a statistic that puts them top of the league form table.

Eccleshill are currently bottom of the table but have recently appointed a new manager in Mark Senior.  They recently recorded their second victory of the season against fellow strugglers Glasshoughton.  After a run of heavy defeats earlier in the season they look to be turning things around and we will certainly be taking nothing for granted today after being held to a 1-1 draw at Plumpton Park back in October.

Banks will be looking for his men to be more clinical in front of goal after being held 1-1 by Appleby Frodingham on Saturday. “We created so many chances, free kicks on the edge of the box and nearly 20 corners.  After the game the Appleby manager said that his team were lucky that it wasn’t double figures.”

The other sides challenging for promotion also slipped up at the weekend with Leeds and Staveley losing and Tadcaster drawing meaning Emley’s draw left them better placed, but are still 5 points behind the leaders.

The manager will be without Simon Wright who is unavailable and Mark Stuart is still suffering from a back injury.  New signing Richard Lavery, a centre half recruited from Wakefield FC reserves is likely to start on the bench.  Ollie Gage is now back training but Banks feels that he needs to get a game in for the reserves before being match fit.  The second string have no game this week but visit Morley Town next Saturday.

Squad:Clark, Joice, Ingham, Leech, Hazelden, Marsh, Townsend, Stuart, Hill, J. Wright, Kenworthy, Shooter, Amos, Garside, Lavery.

Saturday 30th January 2010.

A Hatfull of Missed Chances Costs Emley Dearly.

Emley were held to a 1 - 1 draw at home to Appleby Frodingham at the Welfare. Having created chance after chance in the first half it fell to Lee Hill to score in the second half - taking his chance well. Kenworthy came off the bench and without touching the ball won a penalty. Josh Wright saw his spot kick saved. The visitors then won their only corner of the half and substitute Siddalls header found the net.

29/01/10
AFC Emley v Appleby Frodingham
Saturday 30th January 2010 - Kick Off 3.00pm
Ian Banks is hoping for a good crowd to cheer his side on at the Welfare Ground on Saturday (Kick Off 3.00pm) as Emley take on 8th placed Appleby Frodingham looking to record their 6th win in as many games.

Emley beat the Scunthorpe based side 4-1 back in September with Lee Hill grabbing a hat trick.  The visitors have enjoyed mixed form since then but have the best away record in the league winning all 7 of their fixtures on the road this time.

Emley’s home form is however good and they have yet to suffer a league defeat at the Welfare Ground.  They come into the fixture looking to achieve their 6th win in as many league games and Banks will pick his squad from the same pool of players who have achieved this fine run off form.

Mark Stuart is still a doubt after suffering a back injury.  Banks has decided to release Martin Scully who joined the club back in October from Worsborough Bridge – Scully has seen his chances limited at Emley making just one full appearance and scoring a goal in the victory over Askern.

Squad:
Clarke, Joice, Ingham, Leech, Marsh, Hazelden, J. Wright, S. Wright, Townsend, Hill, Amos, Kenworthy, Shooter, Garside, Stuart.

27/01/10
Grimsby Borough 0 - 2 AFC Emley
NCEL Division One
Emley recorded their 5th victory in as many games despite an unconvincing performance at Grimsby Borough.  Emley were unable to replicate the strong performances against Brighouse and Pontefract over the last week as they laboured to a 2-0 away win.

Josh Wright put Emley in front on the stroke of half time from the penalty spot after the Grimsby keeper had brought down Marc Townsend in the box.  Townsend then wrapped up the game on 89 minutes heading home a cross from Max Joice.

The result moves Emley up into 2nd place in the table, 6 points behind leaders Leeds Carnegie.  Emley are back in action on Saturday (3.00pm) when they entertain 8th placed Appleby Frodingham at the Welfare Ground.

26/01/10

Emley travel to Brigg based Grimsby Borough on wednesday looking for a 5th consecutive victory as they aim to keep up their promotion challenge.

The sides last met in August in the opening fixture of the season with Emley recording an emphatic 6-3 victory.  Emley are currently in 3rd place and a win will move them into 2nd place above Staveley.  Grimsby are 15th in the table, 4 places from bottom but shouldn't be underestimated as 3 of their 4 league victories this season have been recorded over sides in the top six.

Mark Stuart is out of the reckoning after suffering a back strain in the warm up against Pontefract on Saturday.  Max Joice is back in the squad after missing the last game with a minor thigh injury.

Squad:
Clarke, Joice, Ingham, Leech, Marsh, Hazelden, J. Wright, S. Wright, Townsend, Hill, Amos, Kenworthy, Shooter, Garside.

Pontefract Collieries 1-3 AFC Emley
NCEL Division One
Emley made it four league victories in a row with 3-1 win at 5th placed Pontefract.  In an entertaing game both sides worked hard to play good football on a heavy pitch.

The first half was exciting end to end stuff with both sides creating plenty of chances.  Steve Kenworthy put Emley in front with a clean finish inside the box after being allowed too much space by the Pontey defence.  Lee Hill then double the lead heading home a corner before the home side snatched a goal back before half time.

Pontefract battled hard to force an equaliser but Emley's defence held firm before Lee Hill capped a good move and fired home his second to put the game out of sight.  Both sides had goals disallowed as the action continued but the score remained 3-1 to Emley.

This was another battling display for Emley against a very tricky Pontefract side.  Manager Ian Banks will be looking for more of the same from his men as they go in search of a 5th win on the trot against Grimsby Borough on Wednesday.

Pontefract Collieries v AFC Emley
NCEL Div One - Saturday 23rd January (3.00pm)
Emley travel to 5th placed Pontefract this Saturday aiming to record their fourth straight league victory and maintain their promotion challenge.  With the top two sides Leeds Carnegie and Staveley in action against one another this weekend Ian Banks' men have a chance to close the gap on their rivals.

Pontefract will provide tough opposition however and after making a slow start to the season they have moved up the table to 5th and lie just 4 points behind Emley.  When the two sides met last season goalkeeper Mick Clarke was controversially sent off as Emley lost 0-1.  Pontey also won the return fixture at Emley 2-1 so Banks will be looking for his men to seek revenge on Saturday.

Emley will be without right back Max Joice after he picked up a nock in the league cup win over Brighouse in midweek, Josh Ingham is likely to deputise for him after impressing on Wednesday night.

Simon Wright is finally in line for his Emley debut after signing on loan in December from Rainworth.  Wright has extended his loan spell and is now set to stay at the club into February. New signing Wayne Shooter is likely to start on the bench.

Emley Squad:
Clarke, Ingham, Leech, Marsh, Hazelden, Stuart, Townsend, Amos, J.Wright, S.Wright, Kenworthy, Shooter, Garside, Hill, Wilkinson, Armitage, Scully.

Pontefract have reduced their gate prices at Skinner Lane for the remainder of the season in an attempt to entice more spectators to their games so Emley fans will be able to get into the game for just £3 with under 18's going free.

Directions:
Take M62 East from Huddersfield
Exit M 62 at Junction 32 (Xscape and Retail Park.)
Proceed back under the motorway and take the A 639 towards Pontefract.
Go straight across roundabout at the park entrance and retail park.
Turn left at next set of traffic lights

AFC Emley 3 - 3 Brighouse Town (AET - Emley win 5-4 on penalties)
NCEL League Cup 3rd Round
Emley are the first club to progress through to the quarter finals of the NCEL League cup after defeating Brighouse in this hard fought encounter.  After an even start to the game Brighouse took the lead midway through the first half when Wayne Crossley's speculative cross cum shot looped over Mick Clarke in the Emley goal and in off the post.  This spurred the visitors on and they soon double their lead through a tremendous strike by (TBC) on the half volley.

In a similar pattern to when the two clubs met back in December Brighouse looked to tire and Emley finally began to assert some authority on the game as captain Steve Kenworthy applied a cool finish from close range.  Strike partner Lee Hill brought the scores level stabbing home with the Brighouse keeper Lee Williams unable to keep the ball out.

Emley looked to have won the game in extra time when Josh Wright converted a penalty after Lee Hill was brought down in the box.  Emley had chances to wrap up the game but Williams saved well twice when one on one with Micky Amos.  They were made to regret this when Clarke was again outdone by an almost carbon copy of the first goal colliding with with post in the process.  Clarke recieved a prolonged period of treatment leading to 6 minutes of injury time but neither side was able to grab a winning goal so the game went to penalties.

Clarke picked himself up to be Emley's match winner by saving Brighouse's final penalty before Anthony Leech struck home Emley's last to make the score 5-4.  For the record Emley's penalties where converted by Lee Hill, Josh Wright, Mick Amos, Craig Marsh and Anthony Leech.

Emley will look to take the momentum forward to Saturdays league clash at 5th placed Pontefract Collieries with the target of 3 points being vital in their quest for promotion.

AFC Emley v Brighouse Town
NCEL League Cup 3rd Round - Wednesday 20/01/10
Emley are hoping to play their first fixture in over a month when they entertain local rivals Brighouse Town in the NCEL League Cup 3rd round (Wednesday 7.45pm).

The pitch is in great shape because of the hard work of all the individuals who helped clear the pitch over christmas alongside groundsman Ray Chappel. The recent thawing has in turn left the pitch clear of snow.

The last time the clubs met was also the last game played at the Welfare Ground back in early December when Emley recorded a 2-1 victory with Mark Stuart and Steven Kenworthy getting the goals.

Both will be keen to progress to the quarter finals of the competition after recording victories over NCEL Premier clubs in the previous round with Emley victorious at Brodsworth and Brighouse defeating Liversedge at home.

With 5 games postponed over the cold spell Emley now face a busy run in at the end of the season with a string of evening games which will stretch Ian Banks’s squad to the limits as they push for promotion. Banks is well aware of this: The successful teams will need good quality and numbers in their squads to cope, and I think we have this now, fitness is going to be a concern with no games and very little training due to the adverse and freak weather. Despite this I’m hoping that we can start 2010 where we left off in 2009.

With this in mind Banks has added ex- Wakefield man Wayne Shooter, a striker who can also play out wide to bolster his squad. “We have a strong first team squad made up of 18 players, backed up by a strong reserve team squad. This is going to be vital for the 2nd half of the season, with a lot of games to cram in”.

Shooter goes straight into the squad for the Brighouse game with Josh Wright (back from injury) and Gavin Armitage (who missed much of November and December through work commitments). Mark Stuart is suspended whilst Craig Wilkinson and loanee Simon Wright are cup-tied.

Oli Gage is now approaching fitness after being out since October but is likely to get a run out for the reserves on Saturday before being drafted back into the first team squad.

Squad:
Clark, Joice, Leech, Marsh, Hazelden, Hill, Wright (J), Ingham, Townsend, Amos, Garside, Shooter, Kenworthy, Armitage, Scully, Robinson.

15/01/10
AFC Emley v Barton Town OB - Postponed
Emley's home game with Barton scheduled for tomorrow afternoon has been postponed after a pitch inspection morning due to a snow covered pitch.  At this stage the league cup fixture on Wednesday Evening (7.45pm) against Brighouse is also in doubt.  An inspection will be made on tuesday regarding this fixture.

Sheffield Cup Draw Announced

The draw for the quarter finals of the Sheffield and Hallamshire Senior Cup was made last night and Emley have been paired with NCEL Premier side Hallam. The fixture will be played at Hallam's Sandygate ground - officially the oldest football ground in the World but a date for the fixture has yet to be decided due to the current weather conditions.

Emley of course defeated Unibond League side Worksop Town in the last round to make it through to the quarter finals whilst Hallam defeated Frickley Athletic so it is a real clash of the giant killers.

We will post news of the date for the fixture on here as soon as we know any information.

The draw in full:
Hallam v AFC Emley
Mexborough Main Street v Nostell Miners Welfare
Staveley Miners Welfare v Dinnington Town
Stocksbridge PS v Sheffield FC

First Team and Reserves Both Postponed
It will come as no suprise to anybody who has been out of the house during the last week that there will not be a lot of football played this weekend.  We recieved official confirmation from Staveley this morning that Saturday's crunch clash with the league leaders was postponed due to snow and ice covering the Chesterfield sides Inkersall Road ground.

There is no prospect of Emley's second string being able to play their scheduled fixture with Steeton Reserves as the Welfare Ground pitch is covered with over a foot of snow.

Our next fixture is against Barton Town OB at the Welfare Ground on Saturday 16th January (kick off 3.00pm).  With more snow forecast for next week this fixture is already in doubt.

Once the snow clears Emley manager Ian Banks will be able to call upon the services of influential midfielder Josh Wright who has now recovered from his ankle injury. Dean Sidebottom, ruled out for the season with knee ligament damage has now undergone surgery and is out of hospital on the mend - all the best to him as he aims to regain fitness in time for next season.

Todays Match v Pontefract Postponed
Todays match has been postponed following a late morning pitch inspection.  Despite the efforts of the Players, Management, Supporters and Committee members who cleared the pitch on New Years Eve it remains frozen in places. Combining this with a covering of snow this morning there is no way that the match can go ahead.

Happy New Year to all of our fans.  The club are hoping that tomorrows game will go ahead - there will be a pitch inspection at 11.00am.  As soon as we know information will be posted on here.

AFC Emley v Pontefract Collieries
Saturday 2nd January 2010 - Kick Off 3.00pm
After the frustration of seeing the last two weeks fixtures cancelled due to the cold snap AFC are raring to go with their first game of the New Year when they take on Pontefract Collieries at the Welfare Ground on Saturday (Kick Off 3.00pm).

Much of the snow has now cleared at the ground but the club are leaving nothing to chance and have arranged a working party for thursday morning (10.00am start) to ensure that the remaining snow is cleared and the pitch is playable for the game.  Manager Ian Banks and his assistant Grant Crookes will be there along with a number of players and the comittee are hoping that they will be assisted by fans of the club too.

Crookes said:  "The pitch is 75% clear, but I will be up there with Banger helping to remover the last remaining snow.  Then the players who can make it up there will have a light training session and go through some tactics for Saturdays game".

Third placed Emley will be aiming to keep up the pressure on leaders Staveley ahead of their crunch meeting next Saturday whilst Pontefract are also enjoying a good run of form which has propelled them up the table to 5th place after making a slow start to the campaign.

Bank's has an unchanged squad with the exception of Anthony Leech who is unavailable but Lee Hill comes back into the reckoning after missing the victory at Askern two weeks ago.

Squad:
Clark, Joice, Wright (S), Stuart, Townsend, Marsh, Hazelden, Ingham, Scully, Amos, Hill, Wilkinson, Kenworthy, Garside.

26/12/09
AFC Emley v Worsbrough Bridge Postponed
Todays game has been cancelled after an morning pitch inspection.  The Welfare Ground pitch is covered with 5 inches of snow all over with deeper areas where the snow has drifted.

Those fans who are now stuck with nothing to do this afternoon are all invited down to the Sports Bar at the Welfare Ground as chairman Graham Roys is throwing a Christmas Party.  Everyone is welcome and invited to enjoy a little bit of Christmas Cheer!

Meanwhile the club has also postponed the Christmas draw until the New Year and it will now be held at the fixture with Pontefract Collieries on Saturday 2nd January.

We are hoping that this fixture will take place subject to no further heavy snow falls but help will be needed to get the pitch playable.  A working party has been arranged for Thursday (New Years Eve) starting at 9.30 am  to help groundsman Ray Chappel to clear any remaining snow from the ground and prepare the pitch for the fixture.  For further information or to offer your help please contact Richard Hazelden on 01484 684224.

On behalf of all at the club:  enjoy the rest of your Christmas and hope to see you all in the New Year.

AFC Emley V Worsborough Bridge Match Preview

Emley are scheduled to play Worsborough Bridge Athletic at the Welfare Ground on Boxing Day.  The game is however in some doubt as the pitch is currently covered in snow and a pitch inspection is scheduled for 11.00 on the morning of the game.

Emley president Graham Roys is hoping that the pitch will be thawed in time for the game after last Saturdays scheduled fixture with Yorkshire Amateur was controversially cancelled less than an hour before kick off by the match referee.

Roy’s said “We are desperate to get this game on and are hoping for a good Boxing Day crowd.  The team are really on form at the moment and they have even offered to come up to the ground and clear the pitch – our only concern with this is that it could freeze over without a covering of snow”.

Emley will be looking to record a double over Worsborough after comfortably defeating them earlier in the season with a 3-0 scoreline.  Midfielder Dean Sidebottom impressed in that fixture grabbing two of the goals and setting up another one.  Since then the visitors have changed their management and a large number of their squad with experienced ex- Emley AFC striker Mick Norbury taking over the reigns.

Should the fixture go ahead manager Ian Banks has named an unchanged squad.

Squad:Clark, Joice, Leech, Marsh, Hazelden, Stuart, Townsend, Hill, Amos, Ingham, Kenworthy, Scully, Wilkinson, Wright (S), Garside.

Fans are advised to check the website
for news on whether the fixture will go ahead.   The Sports Bar WILL be open for business whether the game is on or not.

Match Off... Definitely (2.15pm)
Todays match has now been postponed by the match referee who was unhappy with the snow on the playing surface.  This decision over rules the opinions of other refs who have visited the ground today.

Apologies on behalf of all at the club to the spectators who have made the trip to the Welfare Ground today.  This decision was entirely out of our control.

Todays Match is On!

AFC Emley V Yorkshire Amateur - Team News

AFC Emley go into Saturdays clash with Yorkshire Amateur (3.00pm at the Welfare Ground) on a high after their 4-1 midweek victory over Askern Villa.

Manager Ian Banks is looking for his side to record their fourth straight league win as they aim to keep up the pressure on league leaders Staveley.  The visitors are currently 12th in the table and struggling for form.

Banks was full of praise for his side’s display at Askern:  “ it was as terrific performance and easily in the top 5 since I took over.   The spirit, work rate and commitment shown by the lads was accompanied by some fantastic finishing.  To win so convincingly on a poor surface, against a top 6 side away from home without 3 regular 1st team regulars was really pleasing”.

Loan signings Simon Wright and Richard Bainbridge who will be with the club for a month after signing from NCEL Premier leaders Rainworth MW are expected to be in the squad along with Lee Hill who was unavailable for the Askern game.  Gavin Armitage is expected to be unavailable until the new year due to his work commitments.

Squad:  Clark, Joice, Leech, Marsh, Hazelden, Stuart, Townsend, Hill, Amos, Ingham, Kenworthy, Scully, Wilkinson, Wright (S), Garside, Bainbridge.

A pitch inspection was made on Friday morning and it was felt that the pitch was playable.  We will however be making another inspection on Saturday morning if more snow falls over the space of Friday evening.  Keep your eyes on the forum and facebook sites for a more immediate update.

16/12/09
Banks signs up Wright
AFC Emley manager Ian Banks has moved to strengthen his squad which has recently been depleted by injury, work comitments and the departure of Josh Nodder and Mark Brady.

Simon Wright signed for the club last night and joins from NCEL Premier leaders Rainworth MW.  He was an integral part in Rainworths promotion campaign last season after joining on loan from Glapwell.  After signing for them at the start of this season Wright has found his chances limited in a side that has gone from strength to strength.

Wright is a left sided player and can operate both in midfield and full back.  He has previous experience with Wakefield FC and played alongside Steve Kenworthy, Marc Townsend and Max Joice so Banks is expecting him to fit straight into the side.

He commented: "I have been busy again trying to improve the squad, it is coming up to Xmas and I have had a few busy with work commitments, we cannot afford to let up now and every game is vital.  Rainworth manager Rudy Funk, has been very kind and he is letting me sign Simon. There maybe another player from the same club this week also, I am very grateful to him".

Wright is likely to go straight into the squad for Saturday's fixture with Yorkshire Amateur.

15/12/09
Askern Villa 1-4 AFC Emley
Emley put in another hugely impressive performance with a 4-1 victory at Askern Villa.  This was a repeat of the scoreline when the two sides met back in August but the performance was arguably better.

Despite a poor playing surface Emley stuck to their passing game and took the game straight to their opponents.  Max Joice was once again outstanding and put Emley into the lead on 10 minutes finishing a great piece of team play with a confident finish inside the box.

Martin Scully doubled the lead on 17 minutes once again with a well taken strike that left the Askern keeper with no chance.  3 minutes later the game was out of reach when Marc Townsend scored the goal of the game with a rocket of a shot from the edge of the penalty area just moments after Craig Marsh had hit the bar with a header.

Askern finally came into the game towards the end of the half forcing a couple of good saves out of Mick Clark but the score remained 3-0 to the visitors.

Emley started the second half as they had done the first and were soon  4-0 up after Mark Stuart chipped the keeper from outside the box after he had come off his line to deny Josh Ingham.  Askern crept back into the game as Emley took looked to consolidate their lead and grabbed a consolation goal on 67 minutes.

The result moves Emley back up into 3rd position in the NCEL Division 1  and they will be looking to continue this winning form when they take on Yorkshire Amateur on Saturday at the Welfare Ground (Kick Off 3.00pm).

Emley's reserve team are in action on Wednesday eveing at the Welfare Ground when they take on Morley Town.  Kick off is at 7.30pm but the game is subject to a lunchtime pitch inspection.

Askern Villa v AFC Emley - Tuesday 15th December 7.45pm

AFC Emley travel to Askern Villa on Tuesday evening (kick off 7.45pm) hoping to keep their promotion challenge on track.

The two sides have met twice this season Emley coming out on top with a 4-1 win in the league and a 2-1 victory in the Presidents Cup.  Askern were tipped by many to threaten the promotion places but have suffered for form recently suffering 4 defeats on the trot.  They turned this around on Saturday with a 5-1 victory over Barton Town OB whilst Emley have been without a game since beating Brighouse last weekend.

Emley manager Ian Banks includes 3 reserve teamers in his squad to cover for injuries and work commitments.  Lee Hill and Gav Armitage are both unavailable and Craig Wilkinson is suffering from a back injury.

Coming into the side are Gaz Garside and Nicky Reid who have both impressed in the reserves this season.  Goalkeeper Jordan Robinson will also travel to the game as cover form Mick Clark who suffered an injury to his elbow against Brighouse last week.

Squad:
Clark, Joice, Leech, Marsh, Hazelden, Scully, Townsend, Stuart, Ingham, Amos, Kenworthy, Garside, Reid, Robinson.

Grimsby Borough v AFC Emley - Wednesday 7.45pm

AFC Emley are back in league action on Wednesday evening when they visit Grimsby Borough (Kick Off 7.45pm).  Manager Ian Banks will be hoping that his side can build upon their impressive 2-1 victory over Brighouse at the weekend.

Grimsby are currently 13th in the table and their form has been mixed this season and when the sides met on the opening day of the season Emley triumphed 6-3.  Emley are third in the table and a win at against Grimsby will put them level on points with the leaders Staveley.  Things are tight at the top of the table and Leeds Carnegie sounded out a warning to the rest of the chasing pack on Monday evening with an emphatic 9-0 victory over Rossington to move into second place.

Speaking ahead of the game assistant manager Grant Crookes re-iterated his sides desire to win.  “ We desperately want promotion this time round.  Last season was a learning curve but we dare not think of anything less than 3 points each game”.

The squad is unchanged from the one that defeated Brighouse and is as follows:

Clarke, Joice, Leech, Marsh, Hazelden, Townsend, Stuart, Hill, Wilkinson, Amos, Kenworthy, Ingham, Scully, Garside.

Supporters travelling to the game are advised that Borough play their home fixture at The Hawthorns, home of Brigg Town.

Emleys second string are also in action on Wednesday when they take on Golcar United at the Welfare Ground  (Kick Off 7.30pm)

05/12/09
AFC Emley 2-1 Brighouse Town
Emley recorded a vital victory over promotion rivals Brighouse in an absorbing local derby.   The result takes Emley up to second place and underlines their promotion ambitions.
The first half was played at a good pace with sides obviously revved up by their respective managers.  The home side had the better of the play in the first half with Lee Hill going closest to breaking the deadlock when he hit the bar from 5 yards out.

Brighouse took the lead early in the first half as the prolific Danny Toronzcak capitalised on a defensive slip to head home.  Emley showed great character and fought back with Mark Stuart curling a fine shot into the top corner of the goals from the edge of the box.

Marc Townsend put in a typical battling performance and almost grabbed a second goal when he slotted a well placed shot past the Brighouse keeper only to see it bounce agonisingly back into play of the inside of the post.  He created the winning goal however with a stunning shot from 30 yards out which rattled the underside of the crossbar with the keeper well beaten.  Emley were not to be outdone by the woodwork this time as captain Steve Kenworthy stabbed home the rebound.

A well earned 3 points for Emley who now must now start to replicate their home form in away games too.  This starts on wednesday evening when they travel to Grimsby Town.

AFC Emley v Brighouse Town  -This Saturday - Match Preview

AFC Emley host local rivals Brighouse Town on Saturday at the Welfare Ground (Kick Off 3.00pm).  The sides are 4th and 5th in the NCEL first division and a win is vital for both sides as they look to boost their promotion credentials.

The two sides were meant to meet last week at Brighouse’s Hove Edge ground but the fixture was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.  Emley’s reserve game against Crag Road was postponed in midweek but are hopeful that Saturdays game doesn’t suffer the same fate.

Emley manager Ian Banks keeps the faith with his squad but will once again be without midfielder Josh Wright who is expected to be out for a further 3 weeks due to ankle ligament damage.

Meanwhile the Emley manager has revealed that two of his squad members will be leaving and paid tribute to their contributions to the club.

Experienced midfielder Mark Brady has accepted a coaching position at Ossett Town who have recently appointed ex-Wolves and Hull City player Peter Daniel as their boss.  Banks said: “I had a conversation with Mark and thought it was a good move for him, he has shown a great attitude and a very conscientious player.”

Also leaving is the talented winger Josh Nodder who has joined NCEL Premier side Dinnington Town.  “I was reluctant to let Josh go, he is a young lad with a lot of talent, but due to work commitments his appearances have been limited, Dinnington is closer for him, geographically and I hope he does well, I have left the door open if it does not work out".

"I would like to thank them both players for their efforts and contribution to the team, and wish them well at their new clubs.”

Brighouse also have also had two departures in the last week in the shape of striker Keiran Corley and winger Dave Watson who have moved to Ossett Albion and Ossett Town respectively.  Defender Daryl Leach is back in the side after missing their defeat to Barnoldswick in the West Riding County Cup in midweek through suspension.

Squads:

AFC EMLEY: Clark, Ingham, Joice, Leech, Marsh, Hazelden, Stuart, Scully, Townsend, Armitage, Hill, Wilkinson, Amos, Kenworthy.

BRIGHOUSE TOWN:
Williams, Wood, J.Townsend, Ryan, Cartman, Leach, Brook, Markham, Crossley, Burgess, Toronczak, A. Townsend, Hallam, O’Gara, Howgate.

AFC Emley Res v Ardsley Celtic Res
WRCL Cup Second Round
Emley's second string progressed to the semi finals of the league cup with a routine 2-1 victory over Ardsley in front of a healthy crowd of 52.  John-Paul Flynn put Emley in front with a composed finish past the Ardsley Keeper from Nick Reids defence splitting through ball.  Reid also provided a tremendous cross for Alex Thomas to plant a well taken header past the stationary keeper to put the home side 2-0 up at half time.

Despite creating chances Emley were unable to add to their lead and allowed Ardsley to claw a goal back. Mark McDermott stabbed the ball home after Jordan Robinson had made a good reaction save to an earlier goalbound effort.  Ardsley were spurred on by this goal and tried hard for an equaliser but were unable to find away past the Emley defence.

Darren Hepworths team are back in action on Wednesday evening at the Welfare Ground when the entertain Crag Road United (Kick off 7.30pm).

Brighouse Town v AFC Emley - Match Preview
Emley manager Ian Banks will be looking for a much improved performance from his side on Saturday when they visit Brighouse Town (kick off 3.00pm).

His side crashed out of the NCEL Presidents Cup on Tuesday evening 5-0 at Selby Town as Banks rested key players Steve Kenworthy, Marc Townsend and Lee Hill with one eye on Saturdays game.  All three are likely to start at Brighouse in what is a crucial fixture for both sides as they look towards promotion.

Lee Hill is hoping to be fit after suffering a neck strain before Saturdays victory over Glasshoughton.  Josh Wright's ankle ligament injury is not as bad as originally expected but he is still likely to be out of action for another 3 weeks.

Emley are currently in 4th place in the table with Brighouse sitting in 5th place just three points behind.  Intriguingly the top 6 clubs in the table are all in action against each other with top side Staveley facing Askern Villa and Tadcaster hosting Leeds Carnegie.  Next weekend the fixtures are reversed so 2 wins for any side could give their side a huge boost.

Squad:
Clark, Ingham, Leech, Marsh, Brady, Stuart, Townsend, Scully, Wilkinson, Kenworthy, Amos, Armitage, Joice, Hill, Hazelden.

Ian Banks will be looking for a stronger showing from his side in Saturday's league trip to local rivals Brighouse Town.  A win is vital in this game as Emley look to maintain their challenge for promotion.

Emley got back to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Glasshougton.  Josh Wright put the hosts in front early on in the first half when his well struck shot flew in through a crowded goalmouth.  Sean Hazeldedn doubled the lead soon by looping a header over the Glasshoughton keeper from a free kick.

Emley had a number of chances to increase their lead as it looked like they were going to run away with the game but were unable to add to their tally.  Glasshoughton were more threatening in the second half but rarely troubled Mick Clarke in the Emley goal.

The result moves Emley up a place to third in the league above Leeds Carnegie but Leeds do have games in hand on us.  Staveley move up to the top of the table with a 3-1 win over Yorkshire Amateur.  Tadcasters game was postponed.

Glasshoughton Welfare - Match Preview

AFC Emley are in NCEL Div 1 action on Saturday (kick off 3.00pm) when they entertain Glasshoughton Welfare.  Ian Banks’ men will be looking to get back to winning ways after falling to a 2-1 defeat at league leaders Tadcaster last weekend.  Emley are still well placed in the hunt for promotion being in 4th place but with the teams around them enjoying consistent form, a win on Saturday is vital.

Visitors Glasshoughton are currently 3rd from bottom of the league having improved from last season when they finished bottom of the pile.  Emley recorded a crushing 7-1 defeat in the corresponding fixture last season with Lee Hill weighing in with a hat trick.

Max Joice and Gav Armitage are both back in the squad after being unavailable for the postponed fixture with Selby Town in midweek.  Meanwhile Glasshoughton will be without centre half Nathan Hazelden who was hoping to line up opposite his brother Sean who plays in the same position for Emley - he has been blighted by a calf Injuryn this season.

SQUAD:
Clarke, Joice, Ingham, Leech, Marsh, Hazelden, Brady, Stuart, Hill, Townsend, Scully, Wright, Kenworthy, Wilkinson, Amos, Armitage.

Peter Maude - One of the Game's Gentlemen
As most of you will know Peter Maude, the former President of Emley AFC passed away last week at his holiday home in Spain.  We heard this news on the morning of our fixture with Worksop and had no hesitation in holding a minutes silence before the kick off to remember a man who always be remembered by fans of football in Emley.

Peter was made president
of the club in 1983 and was at the helm throughout many memorable occasions including the FA Vase final at Wembley in 1988, promotion from the NCEL to the Unibond League the following season and reaching the 3rd round of the FA Cup against West Ham in 1998.
Peter remained in this role as the club relocated to Wakefield and went within a point of gaining promotion to the Conference.

Well respected in Non League circles he was elected to the NPL’s League Management Committee 1992 but famously resigned in 1999 after the league controversially accepted Barrow AFC as a member after they were thrown out of the Conference.  He rejoined the board in 2001 and was elected chairman a year and a half later became Chairman.  Peter held this position until resigning recently.

Away from football Peter was an insurance broker and ran a successful practice in Penistone before retiring around 7 years ago.  He was also a keen and talented cricketer and in his batsman /wicketkeeper role captained his club side Emley Clarence to the double in the Huddersfield Central League in addition to skippering the Inter-League side on numerous occasions.

Fans of Wakefield, Emley and other clubs throughout the non league game have been saddened by the news with numerous postings and tributes appearing on websites, forums and in the local press.  Malcolm Lumb puts it perfectly with these simple words “very sad news, our game has lost a true gentleman”.

On behalf of all at AFC we send our condolences to Peter’s family.

Peter’s funeral will take place at Penistone Church on Monday November 30th at 11.00am followed by cremation at Grenoside. Gathering afterwards at the White Hart Pub, Penistone.

Tadcaster Albion 2-1 AFC Emley
Emley slipped to defeat in the mud at Tadcaster Albion this afternoon and missed out on their chance to overtake the league leaders.  In an entertaining game which the home side just about edged on posession Emley were eventually undone by an unfortunate own goal.

Tadcaster took the lead through Mike Braithwaite and Emley hit back almost straight away through Mark Stuart.  Tadcaster's winner coming from the boot of Sean Hazelden.

Emley will be aiming to bounce back from this result on Tuesday evening when they visit Selby Town in the Presidents Cup Second Round.

Saturday 14th November - Kick Off 3.00pm
Third placed Emley will be looking to overtake their hosts and league leaders Tadcaster Albion when the two sides meet in Saturday’s NCEL Division One clash (Kick Off 3.00pm).  Manager Ian Banks is set to bring Sean Hazelden and Max Joice back into the starting line up.

Tadcaster are two points above Emley who are currently in third place. Banks will be looking to extend his sides fine run of form after defeating Unibond Premier side Worksop Town on Wednesday evening.  Albion will provide tough opposition though having lost just one league game this season.

Banks sticks with the squad that did him proud on Wednesday with Joice likely to regain his place in the starting line up with Josh Ingham making way at full back.  Hill will move into midfield to allow Sean Hazelden to play at centre half with Mark Brady dropping to the bench.  Also in his squad is full back Martin Scully who has just signed from Worsbrough Bridge.

Irish back at the Welfare Ground
We once again play hosts to Huddersfield Irish Centre this Sunday as they take on Liverpool based Britannia FC in the second round of the FA Carlsberg Sunday Cup (Kick Off 1.00pm).

Britannia progressed with a 5-0 first-round win at home to city rivals BRNESC whilst Iris
Centre, quarter-finalists in the prestigious national competition last season, were 4-1 winners over Leeds side Chapeltown Brazil at Emley.  Meanwhile, holders Scots Grey, who knocked Irish Centre out last season, have withdrawn from the current competition.  Their scheduled opponents Swanfield, from Hull, go straight through to the last 32.

Irish Centre are currently second to Wellington Westgate in the Huddersfield Sunday League.

Emley Sign Scully
Emley manager has made another new signing in the shape of Martin Scully.  Scully has been recruited from local rivals Worsborough Bridge and follows his former team mate Craig Wilkinson to the Welfare Ground.  Scully is a full back and will offer further defensive options as Emley look to push on in their challenge for promotion to the NCEL Premier.

Peter Maude
We are sad to hear that Peter Maude, president of Wakefield FC passed away yesterday.  Peter was the driving force behind the success of the old Emley AFC club and instrumental in the success of the club in the 1980's and 90's.  Peter remained in his role as president as the club relocated to Wakefield and eventually became Wakefield FC.  Peter was a popular and well respected business man outside of the footballing world.  He will be remembered as a true gentleman and sadly missed by his many friends.  Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time and he will never be forgotton by Emley football fans.  RIP.

AFC Emley v Worksop Town - Match Preview
Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup (2nd Round)
Emley face potentially their toughest test of the season in the shape of Unibond Premier League side Worksop Town on Wednesday evening (7.45pm kick off).  Fresh from a 4-0 league victory over Teversal Emley manager Ian Banks is looking to his side to put in another good performance.

Whilst Worksop have visited the Welfare Ground many times in the past when up against the old Emley FC this is the first competitive fixture between the two sides.  Worksop did visit the Welfare Ground in a friendly 3 years ago when Ronnie Glavin was their manager running out 6-1 winners.  Much has changed since then and Emley will be hoping that Wednesday’s game is a much closer affair.

Worksop are enduring a difficult season off the pitch having been evicted from their former Sandy Lane ground two years ago they are now forced to play their home games over 30 miles away at Ilkeston Town.  Against the odds they are holding their own this season and are currently in 14th place in the Unibond Premier Division after a 2-0 win at Ossett Town on Saturday.

Banks is without his influential centre half Sean Hazelden who misses out due to work commitments – versatile Lee Hill takes his place after returning from suspension.  Josh Nodder is also unavailable and is replaced by Gavin Armitage who has impressed for the reserves of late. Richard Hirst also steps in from the reserves to provide defensive cover on the bench.

Max Joice is likely to be rested to the bench as he has been carrying an injury and Ollie Gage is likely to be out for the next 6 weeks so Josh Ingham will start at right back.  Striker Craig Wilkinson is cup-tied after playing earlier in the competition for Worsborough Bridge.

Emley Squad:
Clark, Ingham, Leech, Marsh, Hill, Wright, Stuart, Townsend, Brady, Amos, Kenworthy.
Subs:Hirst, Joice, Armitage.

7/11/09
AFC Emley 4 - 0 Teversal FC
Emley recorded a convincing 4-0 home victory to keep up their challenge on leaders Tadcaster Albion.  Tadcaster and all the other top 5 sides also won today meaning Saturdays game at Taddy is a "must win" for both sides.

Teversal had the better of the opening exchanges and kept Emley keeper Mick Clark busy in spells throughout the game but lacked the killer instinct to put away their chances.

Midway through the first half Emley took the lead when Anthony Leech slotted home from close range after great work by Steve Kenworthy.  Leech had the ball in the net a few minutes earlier but was ruled out for offside.  Max Joice doubled the lead when his long range shot deflected past the keeper off a Teversal defender.

Emley started the second half at a blistering pace with Kenworthy and Mark Stuart both going close.  The result was put out of sight by Josh Wright who hit home from inside a crowded penalty area.  Craig Marsh added the fourth with a looping header over the keeper from a Wright free kick.

A good performance from an Emley side who at times played some superb passing football.  After going in front we never looked like surrendering the lead and defended well right to the final whistle.

Next up at the Welfare Ground are Unibond Premier side Worksop Town who visit on Wednesday evening (Kick Off 7.45pm) in the Second Round of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup.

AFC Emley v Teversal FC - Match Preview

AFC Emley entertain Teversal in the NCEL Division One on Saturday (Kick Off 3.00pm) and will be looking to keep up their pursuit of leaders Tadcaster Albion.  Every game is important at this stage in the season with just 4 points separating the top 7 sides.

Emley recorded a 2-0 victory at Hemsworth last Saturday and will be looking to build on this performance as manager Ian Banks has the rare luxury of a virtually unchanged squad with only Lee Hill missing through suspension after clocking up 5 bookings.

Banks is full of praise for his squad and the progress that they are making: “I don’t like to single anyone out usually, but 2 players in particular, Steve Kenworthy Kenny has been magnificent in the last few games attitude and application 1st class. The other lad is Mark Townsend, I have asked him to play out of his normal position and without question, he was awesome against Hemsworth his work rate phenomenal”

Max Joice should be fit after limping off against Hemsworth but Ollie Gage is likely to be out for at least six more weeks after picking up a cartilage injury.
Gavin Armitage makes a welcome return to the squad after notching 7 goals in 4 starts for the reserves including a hat trick in the 4-2 WRCAL cup victory over Dudley Hill Athletic.

Our visitors Teversal have suffered 4 straight defeats in recent games but should be by no means underestimated as they defeated NCEL Premier League big boys Scarborough Athletic in the game prior.

Looking back through the record books our last 4 fixtures against the “Tevie Boys” have all been 6 goal thrillers with Emley triumphing 4-2 at home and away last season.  During the 2006/07 season both games ended up as 3-3 draws.

Squad:
Clarke, Joice, Leech, Marsh, Hazelden, Brady, Stuart, Townsend, Wright, Wilkinson, Kenworthy.
Subs: (From)
Amos, Ingham, Armitage, Nodder.

Hemsworth MW 0 - AFC Emley 2. NCEL 31.10.09

A much improved second half performance with goals from Josh Wright and Lee Hill securing the points at our near neighbours.

Emley were fortunate not to end the first half trailing as Hemsworth had 3 good opportunities to score. Into the second half Emley started to play good passing football with Josh Wright putting in an excellent performance.

Hemsworth finished the game with 10 men after Mark Stuart was on the wrong end of a punch.

The result moves Emley up into third position. Askern were beaten by a single goal at Grimsby whilst Staveley were held to a draw at the resurgent Glasshoughton. Leaders Tadcaster also drew 2 - 2 with Barton OB's.

Hemsworth Miners Welfare v AFC Emley Saturday 31st October 2009. NCEL Division 1.

Emley manager Ian Banks has been waiting on the fitness of Lee Hill and Max Joice before naming his side that will visit Hemsworth Miners Welfare on Saturday.  Both will be available, although Josh Wright will not make the trip having not recovered sufficiently from his ankle injury.

Banks was disappointed with the 4 -2 defeat midweek with Barton, having made it publicly known that the squad should be challenging for promotion this season. He is expecting a reaction from his team who take on local rivals Hemsworth on Saturday. He acknowledged that last season was a learning curve, but now with a reserve team at the Welfare and the ability to attract and bring players to the club if necessary. He warned his squad that no one should feel comfortable with their place in the team, feeling that 1 or 2 are playing within their comfort zone.

Hemsworth have made an indifferent start to the season and currently sit 3rd from bottom of the Northern Counties East League with 7 points from 8 games. The Wakefield club have brought in 2 players this week and look to be improving having drawn with Pontefract and comprehensively beaten Barton Town in recent weeks. The teams met in the league cup in August with goals from Steven Kenworthy and Mick Amos securing a win for Emley.

Team.  Clarke, Joice, Leech, Townsend, Marsh, Hazelden, Ingham, Brady, Kenworthy, Wilkinson, Hill. Subs Amos, Nodder, Stuart.

Barton Town Ob's 4 - 2 AFC Emley. 27.10.09

Emley travelled to Barton on Tuesday evening and were beaten by 4 goals to 2. Goals from Kenworthy and Amos made little impact on the result which Barton Deserved to win.

Emley were up by two goals before Steven Kenworthy pulled one goal back. Following the half time break Barton effectively killed the game off within 35 seconds to go 3 -1 up. Barton extended their lead further before Mick Amos pulled one back in the 85th minute. Emley were to hit the post in the last minute of the game before Wilkinson hooked the ball over the bar from just 4 yards out.

Barton lost their captain with a second yellow card for persistent fouling.

Lee Hill also picked up a thigh injury during the game.

Thanks to Grant for the update, sorry I could not make the game.

Barton Town Old Boys v AFC Emley - Tuesday 27th of October 2009.

NCEL - Division 1.

Ahead of the trip to Barton Town Tuesday evening (Kickoff 7-45 pm), Emley Number 2 Grant Crookes has revealed that despite approaches to sign him, Craig Marsh and Steven Kenworthy. All have chosen to remain with AFC Emley.

Grant was approached by Eccleshill to take up their recent managers post, he also stated that Worsborough had lodged a 7 day notice on defender Marsh. Whilst Ossett Albion playing 2 divisions higher in the Unibond North First Division had made a similar move for Emley Captain Kenworthy.

Crookes paid tribute to the squad that has been built at Emley, and the excellent back up they are getting from Darren Hepworth with the reserves side. He stated that the "togetherness within the team is second to none, we are enjoying all aspects of the training and matches coupled with the support of the committee and the very loyal fans".

He believes it is this, and the strong desire for success that permeates through the club which was the deciding factor for all 3 to stay loayl to the club.

Manager Ian Banks takes a settled team to Marsh Lane, Barton who sit in 10th position in the league having played one less game than Emley. Barton came from behind to beat Teversal on Saturday 2 - 1 with goals from Shaun Day and Gareth Barlow.

Team: Clarke, Townsend, Leech, Marsh, Hazelden, Brady, Stuart, Wright, Hill, Kenworthy, Wilkinson. Subsitutes from Gage, Joice, Ingham, Amos.

Emley 1 - Bottesford 1. Saturday 24th of October 2009.

Emley will be ruing the missed chances this afternoon at the Welfare Ground. Emley took the lead with a Craig Marsh goal in the second half, Mick Clarke conceeded a penalty allowing the visitors to draw level. Bottesford were reduced to 10 men with Mitchell adjudged to handle on the line. Josh Nodder lifted the ball well over the bar from the penalty spot.

Full match report to follow.

Emley Reserves won convincingly at Ardsley Reserves - 2 goals from Alex Thomas, with Richard Hirst and Josh Ingham also chipping in. This result now takes the team top of the league.

23rd October 2009

AFC Emley take on Bottesford Town at the Welfare Ground this Saturday (3.00pm) aiming to keep up their challenge for the NCEL division 1 promotion places.

Manager Ian Banks has a largely unchanged squad from the side that defeated Rossington 4-2 last Saturday.  Coming into the starting line up are Max Joice at right back with his replacement Marc Townsend likely to start on the bench.

Striker Craig Wilkinson who scored two debut goals after coming on as substitute at Rossington will make his first full start with Josh Nodder making way.

Banks is happy with the start that his team have made this time out having suffered just one league defeat so far (at Bottesford, back in early September).  “With the recent new signings made we have competition for places in almost every position now – it causes me a problem, but it’s a nice one”
“I think that we have a squad now who can challenge for promotion, I want to finish 1st, and that’s what you have to strive for , not 2nd best”.

Emley are currently handily placed at fifth with in the league 17 points and Bottesford in eighth – 2 points behind them.  The league is still very tight with just 5 points separating top side Askern and Bottesford so a good performance on Saturday is vital.

Squad:
Clark, Joice, Leech, Marsh, Hazelden, Stuart, Wright, Brady, Hill, Wilkinson, Kenworthy,

Subs: (From)
Townsend, Gage, Amos, Nodder

Emley’s second string recorded a 4-2 victory over Campion reserves in the WRCAL Div 2 – the result leaves them in 3rd place just one place behind the leaders Westbrook YMCA.

17th of October 2009 - Rossington Main FC 2 - AFC Emley 4.

Craig Wilkinson came off the bench to score 2 goals in the last 10 minutes of the match. Rossington had taken the lead in the first half, an own goal allowed Emley to draw level. A Lee Hill strike was equalised with a second half penalty for the home team, the introduction of Craig Wilkinson secured the points for the visitors.

Wilkinson Re-signs for Emley
We are pleased to welcome Craig Wilkinson back for his second spell at the club.  "Wilkie" has been with Worsbrough Bridge for the last two seasons after a brief spell with Emley in 2007.

Wilkinson will provide Emley manager Ian Banks with more attacking options as the club chase aim to keep up their good form in the NCEL Division 1.  He already has 4 goals to his name for Bridge this season and we hope that he will continue this good form for Emley.

Wilkinson will start on the bench for tomorrows league fixture at Rossington Main (Kick Off 3.00pm).

Rossington Main v AFC Emley - Match Preview
Emley travel to Doncaster based club Rossington Main on Saturday (Kick off 3.00pm) in a NCEL Division One fixture.

Main are currently in mid table having made a good start to the season but have lost their last three league fixtures against Pontefract, Stavely & Askern.  Emley will be looking to improve upon their last two results which both ended in 1-1 draws against Leeds Carnegie and Eccleshill United.

Ian Banks welcomes back Mark Townsend, Mark Brady, Lee Hill and Josh Nodder into the squad that defeated Brodsworth in midweek.  He is without Max Joice and Oli Gage who both picked up injuries in the league cup game.  Jack Greene replaces Joice at right back whilst Townsend comes in in place of Gage.  Captain Steve Kenworthy is back in the starting line up partnering Lee Hill.

Emley Progress in League Cup
AFC Emley recorded an extra time victory over NCEL Premier side Brodsworth Welfare in the League Cup on Wednesday evening.  In contrast to Saturdays draw with Leeds Carnegie Emley found it difficult to play their normal flowing football and ultimately it was all about grinding out a victory.

Emley went a goal behind on the stroke of half time to a fine individual goal by Welfare captain Shane Fox.  They bounced back 5 minutes into the second half when home defender Neil Bagshaw looped a header over his own keeper.  Fox was then sent off on 54 minutes for throwing a punch as Emley exerpted more pressure on their hosts.

Steve Kenworthy was introduced from the bench on 70 minutes as Emley pressed ahead looking to get a winner but Brodsworth's defence held firm and the tie went into extra time.  Gavin Armitage grabbed Emley's winner on 96 minutes after bursting through the Welfare defence and chipping the onrushing keeper.

So Emley progress in another competition but manager Ian Banks will have selection problems again on Saturday with Max Joice suffering a leg injury in the first half and Oli Gage in the second half after picking up a knock.  Both players are likely to be out of the squad for the trip to Rossington Main.

December Fixture Changes
The NCEL have changed the fixture schedules for in December allowing clubs to contest a number of local derbies.  As a result Emley now have a local derby v Worsbrough Bridge on Boxing Day. This fixture has been brought forward from the 2nd of January.

We now travel to Askern on 15th December instead of Boxing Day.

Worsbrough have just appointed Micky Norbury (a familiar name for Emley FC fans) as their new manager. A great centre forward in his day but let down so often by his discipline.

Brodsworth Welfare Match Preview
Emley travel to NCEL Premier bottom club Brodsworth on Wednesday (kick of 7.45pm) in the NCEL League Cup.

Manager Ian Banks sticks largely with the squad that drew with Leeds Carnegie on Saturday but rests Steve Kenworthy and Marc Townsend to the bench.  Mark Stuart comes into the starting line up and will play in midfield with Josh Wright.  Mick Amos replaces Kenworthy up front and Gavin Armitage returns to the first team after bagging two goals for the reserves on saturday.

Brodsworth are having a tough season have found goals difficult to come by - as a result they are rooted to bottom spot without a win to date.  They have however recruited a new assistant manager in Tim Dowey and will be looking turn around their fortunes.

Squad:  Clarke, Joice, Leech, Marsh, Hazelden, Stuart, Wright, Gage, Ingham, Armitage, Amos.

10.10.09 - AFC Emley 1 - Leeds Carnegie 1.

Emley earn a credible draw against Carnegie.

In a very entertaining game Emley shared the points with a very strong Leeds Carnegie side at the Welfare Ground.

New signing Joshua Wright scored a brilliant half volley to take the lead after 35 minutes. Mick Clarke made a string of excellent saves throughout the game, but was unable to prevent Chiltern scoring in the second half.

Banks signs up Wright from Winterton

Emley manager Ian Banks has made another quality midfield signing with the recruitment of Josh Wright from NCEL Premier side Winterton Rangers just a week after signing Mark Brady from Brighouse.

Wright is a player that Banks has admired for some time and he is delighted that he has finally signed for the club.
“Josh has been outstanding in the league above and will hopefully give us what we have been missing - someone who can put their foot on the ball and create chances, so I am very excited at the prospect of him joining.”

Barnsley based Wright is 21 and has been on the books of Darlington, Barnsley in the past and had spells and Wakefield and Brodsworth last season.  He has two goals to his credit this season.
Wright goes straight into the first team squad against Leeds Carnegie on Saturday and is likely figure in the starting line-up.

Emley v Leeds Carnegie FC - Match Preview
Emley entertain Leeds Carnegie at the Welfare Ground on Saturday (3.00pm kick off) in a crunch NCEL Division One clash.  The two sides occupy fourth and fifth places and are level on 13 points with Emley ahead by virtue of a stronger goal difference.  Both sides have a reputation for playing attractive attacking football and the game promises to be an exciting affair.

Emley manager Ian Banks will be boosted by having a stronger squad of players to pick fromn with only Simeon Fletcher and long term casualties Dean Sidebottom and Matt Higginbottom out of the reckoning.

Mick Clark, Max Joice, Mark Brady and Josh Nodder return to the side after missing Wednesdays victory over Yorkshire Main.  Lee Hill is expected to start after suffering from a bout of tonsilitis and is likely to partner Steve Kenworthy up front.

Squad:  Clark, Joice, Leech, Townsend, Marsh, Hazelden, Gage, Brady, Kenworthy, Hill, Nodder.

Subs From:  Stuart, Ingham, Firth, Amos, Armitage.

Emley to face Tigers in Sheffield Cup
Emley have a tough away fixture against Unibond Premier side Worksop Town in the Sheffield and Hallamshire Cup.  Emley earned their place in the second round with a 3-0 victory over Yorkshire Main whilst the Tigers were given a bye on account of their higher league status.

The match is to be played in the week beginning 14/11/09 - date and time to be confirmed.  Worksop have endured a turbulent couple of seasons and having been evicted from their Sandy Lane ground two years ago they currently groundshare with Ilkeston Town.  They are currently in 17th place in the Unibond Premier division and have recently been the subject of a transfer embargo by the FA due to wages not been payed to a former player.

Further details on this fixture will be posted as soon as we have them.

Emley Progress in Sheffield Cup
AFC Emley progressed to the second round of the Sheffield and Hallamshire Senior Cup with a 3-0 victory over Yorkshire Main.  The home side took the lead on 18 minutes when Marc Townsend fired home from 12 yards after good work by Steve Kenworthy.  Despite creating a number of chances they were unable to extend their lead until midway through the second half when Lee Hill scored to make it 2-0.  Emley's third came close to full time when Steve Kenworthy slotted home from close range.

Visitors Main gave a good account of themselves playing good football and putting Emley under pressure but Jordan Robinson making his first team debut as keeper gave a good account of himself and kept a clean sheet.

Emley are in back in league action on Saturday (3.00pm) when they entertain 5th placed Leeds Carnegie.

AFC Emley v Yorkshire Main FC

AFC Emley are in Sheffield Cup action on Wednesday evening (7.45pm) when they host Yorkshire Main FC.

Main hail from the village of Edlington near Doncaster and were previously affiliated to the local colliery of the same name.  They play their football in the Central Midlands League Premier Division and are enjoying an excellent start to the season.  They recorded a 3-2 win away at FC Brimmington on Saturday to move them into 2nd place in the table.

A weakened Emley side recorded a frustrating 1-1 draw at Eccleshill United and will be looking to get back to winning ways in this fixture.  Manager Ian Banks is unavailable and therefore coach Grant Crookes will
deputise
Crookes has key players Anthony Leech, Gavin Armitage and Craig Marsh back in the side and names a squad featuring a number of reserve team players.

Leading scorer and captain Steve Kenworthy is rested to the bench along with Lee Hill who is recovering from a bout of tonsillitis.
Luke Robinson the reserve team keeper makes his first team debut with Nicky Reid, Gareth Garside and Kane Bowker also coming into the side.

Eccleshill United v AFC Emley - Match Preview
AFC Emley travel to bottom placed Eccleshill United in the NCEL first division on Saturday (3.00pm) looking to close the gap on leaders Askern Villa to just one point.

Askern are currently 4 points ahead of Emley but have played two more games and with all the other leading sides not in action it gives Emley a great chance to move into second place.
Emley have maintained an impressive run of form in the league this season winning 4 out of their 5 games scoring 17 goals in the process whilst their Bradford based opponents have lost all of their opening fixtures.

Ian Banks welcomes back Max Joice and Marc Townsend into the squad after the pair missed the last few fixtures through injuries – both featured in the reserve teams 1-1 draw with Bay Athletic reserves on Wednesday evening and came through unscathed.

Banks is still without five first team regulars through injury and is actively recruiting some new faces to bolster his squad – the first of these being experienced midfielder Mark Brady who has signed from Brighouse Town.

Squad:Clark, Firth, Marsh, Hazelden, Joice, Brady, Gage, Ingham, Nodder, Hill, Kenworthy.

Hill Grabs Hat Trick as Emley Hit Form
Emley put in a tremendous performance at third place Appleby Frodingham despite fielding a understrength side due to an ever growing injury list.

Lee Hill put Emley in front in the early stages of the game slotting home from an seemingly impossible angle with the home side grabbing an equaliser to make the scores even at half time.  In a devestating 15 minute spell at the start of the second half Hill scored two long range efforts to make it a hat trick in addition to one by Craig Marsh to put the game out of site.

The only sour point of the game was an injury to Gav Armitage who limped off at the end of the first half.  Full match report to follow later.

Emley suffer injury time defeat
Emley crashed out of the FA Vase to a goal deep into injury time to higher level opponents Alsager.  Despite dominated the early exchanges of the game Emley went in a goal down at half time.  They bounced back quickly in the second half with goals from Lee Hill and Steven Kenworthy.  With about 15 minutes to go strong appeals for hand ball were turned down when Josh Nodders goalbound shot was deflected away by an Alsager defender.   This appeared to knock Emley's confidence and the visitors responded with a goal direct from a free kick which the home defence will be disapointed to have conceeded and a well taken header in injury time.

Reserves Hit 6 at Kirkburton
Emley's second string recorded a convincing 0-6 win at Kirkburton today and according to manager Darren Hepworth it could have easily been by a wider margin.  Emley's goals came from Matt Neesam (2), Kane Bowker (2), Ben Dunne and Richard Hirst.

AFC Emley v Alsager Town - FA Vase 2nd Qualifying Round
Saturday 19th September 3.00pm

AFC Emley are in FA Vase action on Saturday (kick off 3.00pm) when they entertain Alsager Town in the 2nd preliminary round of the competition.

The competition holds great memories for fans of the old Emley FC who made it all the way to the final in 1988 eventually losing in extra time to Colne Dynamos at Wembley stadium.  Last years competition was won by Whitley Bay who triumphed 2-0 over Glossop.

Manager Ian Banks is hoping that Emley can improve on their last two competitive fixtures which ended in defeats at Bottesford Town and Worsbrough Bridge.  His side put in a much improved performance against a strong Huddersfield District League XI on Monday evening coming out 3-2 winners.

Emley’s side has been depleted through injuries and unavailability in over the last few weeks – Max Joice is likely to be out for at least 3 more weeks with an ankle injury as is Simeon Fletcher who picked up a similar injury on Monday evening.  Joe Howson is still injured and Josh Ingham and Jack Greene are both unavailable.  Key players Lee Hill, Marc Townsend and Dean Sidebottom make a welcome return to the side.

Emley’s opponents Alsager are currently 3rd from bottom in the Vodkat NW Counties Premier League (a rung above Emley in the non-league footballing pyramid) and suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to league leaders Newcastle Town on Tuesday evening.

Banks has called upon local football fans to get up to the game on Saturday to support his side “With Town away at Milwall we are hoping for a good turn out on Saturday -  we want to do well in this prestigious competition so good support is vital, for a small club like ours, we will be going all out to play some good football and get a win.”

Emley Triumph in "Sudders" Charity Game
AFC Emley got back to winning ways in tonight's charity fixture against a strong Huddersfield District League XI. The match held in aid of the "Sign Up For Sudders" campaign was a great success financially and an exciting spectacle for the crowd of nearly 300 spectators.

Emley took the lead on 38 minutes with a well taken goal by Mark Stuart after good work by Anthony Leech and Steve Kenworthy.  They doubled the lead on 75 minutes when James Bowker headed home a Gav Armitage cross.

The League XI responded 5 minutes late when Doran hit a speculative shot almost from the touchline with Emley's substitute 'keeper Jordan Robinson stranded.  A couple of minutes earlier Robinson had foiled the same player tipping another long range effort onto the bar.

Emley's third and decisive goal came on 85 minutes when manager Ian Banks making a cameo appearance curled a stunning free kick round the wall and onto the crossbar with the keeper well beaten, the ball fell to captain Steve Kenworthy who made no mistake from 6 yards out.

The game was not over however as the League XI clawed a goal back a minute later after hitting the bar finally forcing the ball home to make the final score 3-2 to the hosts.

See match reports page for a full match report and more pictures.

AFC Emley v Huddersfield & District League XI
Huddersfield FA Charity Cup - Monday 14th September 7.45pm
At the Welfare Ground, Emley

All proceeds from the fixture will be donated to "Sign up for Sudders" - a campaign to educate the young adults on Bone Marrow, Blood and Organ Donation.

The campaign was set up by Adrian Sudbury - an inspirational young journalist for the Huddersfield Examiner - who documented his long fight against Leukaemia in an online blog. "Sudders" sadly lost this battle just over a year ago but not before launching an incredible media campaign to raise awareness for the disease and the importance of the disease.

The campaign now continues to be overseen by Adrian's family and former colleagues.

Emley manager Ian Banks intends to put out a strong side against Jimmy Martins XI which will showcase the best of the Huddersfield & District Leagues talent.

Special guests attending the game will be Adrians sister Carrie and Huddersfield Town Legend Andy Booth.

Fans of all clubs are invited to what promises to be a great night. A collectors programme is being issued for the game.

Should any individual or club wish to make a donation to the fund please contact Richard Hazelden at AFC Emley or email me on robdixon@wmsykes.co.uk.

Many thanks.

Emley Slump at Worsbrough
Emley slumped to a heavy 5-2 defeat at Worsbrough Bridge in the Wilkinson Sword Trophy last night.  Manager Ian Banks fielded a weakened side as Emley made their second visit to Worsbrough in a week.

Dean Sidebottom put Emley ahead in the 9th minute but Bridge fought back and went in 3-1 up at half time with goals from Hirst, Pollock and Shirt.  They extended their lead on 68 minutes with a Garside penalty and Anthony Leech saw red for a hand ball on the goal line.

Emley finished the game with just nine men on the pitch as Richard Hirst limped off injured.  Worsbrough then added a fifth goal through Ogden in the dying minutes of the game.

Emley will look to improve on this performance in their big FA Vase fixture against Alsager Town a week on Saturday.  Before that they face a charity fixture against a Huddersfield and District League XI on Monday (7.45pm kick off).

Alsager confirmed as Vase opponents
Emley will face Alsager Town in the Second Qualifying round of the FA Vase after the Vodkat North West Counties side defeated Ashton Athletic this afternoon.

The fixture will take place on Saturday 19th September at the Welfare Ground (Kick off 3.00pm).

Emley suffer first league defeat
Emley were unable to build on their recent run of good form and slumped to a disapointing 1-0 defeat at Bottesford.  Emley were rocked by the withdrawal of Matt Higginbottom (flu), Jordan Kenefick (injured) and Mick Amos (family bereavement) this morning added to Max Joice, Dean Sidebottom and Gav Armitage who were already unavailable.

Emley made a poor start to the game and went in a goal behind at half time.  They put in a much improved performance in the second half with Steve Kenworthy the biggest threat - Bottesford stayed firm and left Emley frustrated.

Bottesford Town v AFC Emley Match Preview
Emley travel to Scunthorpe based Bottesford Town this afternoon (kick off 3.00pm) looking for a fourth consecutive league victory and the chance to draw level on points with early leaders Tadcaster Albion.

Emley manager Ian Banks is once again forced to re-shuffle his pack with Max Joice, Dean Sidebottom, Josh Ingham and Gavin Armitage all unavailable.  Joe Howson and Ollie Gage are now both fit slot straight back into the starting line up.  Anthony Leech steps up from the bench and is likely to figure in midfield.

Up front Banks sticks with Micky Amos and captain Steven Kenworthy who will be looking to extend his run of scoring which has seen him net 8 goals in 5 games.

Squad:
Clark, Howson, Greene, Higginbottom, Hazelden, Leech, Townsend, Gage, Hill, Kenworthy, Amos.
Subs:
Kenefick, Stuart, Nodder.

Directions:

Emley Up To 2nd Place As Sidebottom Shines
Emley recorded a convincing win over their local rivals Worsbrough to make it 3 wins in 3 games and move them up to second in the league table. Not a classic performance for Emley but once again they looked sharp up front and disciplined at the back.

Emley took the lead through a stunning free kick by Dean Sidebottom from about 25 yards out about 2 minutes into the garme. Sidebottom then doubled the lead the lead with another audacious free kick - this time approximately 35 yards out to put Emley 2 up at half time.

Sidebottom missed the chance to record a hat trick when the 'Bridge keeper saved from the penalty spot. He made ammends for his miss soon after putting in a perfect cross for skipper Steve Kenworthy to dive in and notch his 8th goal in just 5 games.

Worsbrough were restricted to very few chances but Emleys keeper Mick Clarke was forced to make a tremendous save from a first time shot after he had punched out a corner.

Emley travel to Bottesford Town on Saturday hoping to continue what is becoming an impressive run of form.

Banks Keeps the Faith
Emley manager Ian Banks keeps the faith with the squad responsible for Emley's impressive 4-1 victory over Askern when Emley visit Worsbrough Bridge tonight (7.45pm Kick Off).  Emley will be looking for their 3rd league victory in as many games this season.

Banks commented after the Askern game "
I was absolutely delighted with the performance - the work rate and committment was 1st class. thought Oli Gage was superb, Higgi second half very good, Hilly and Townsy work there proverbles off and Kenny looks fitter and more hungry than ever and what a clever player. Askern are a good side got some good players -they wont lose many games this season. The result might have flattered us a bit - but no doubt we deserved it."

Also returning to the squad are Mark Stuart and Anthony Leech.

Squad:

Team: Clarke, Gage, Green, Townsend, Higgingbotham, Hazelden, Sidebottom, Hill, Kenworthy, Amos, Armitage, Joice, Ingham, Kenefick, Stuart, Leech.

Kenworthy hits Four as Askern are swept aside
Emley produced a stunning performance against the much fancied Askern with captain Steven Kenworthy grabbing all four goals for Emley.

Askern took the lead within the first 3 minutes of the game with a well worked goal that tore the Emley defence apart. Emley bounced back quickly as Kenworthy slid the ball past Askerns keeper on the edge of the box after a great through ball from Dean Sidebottom. Both sides had chances throughout the remainder of the half but the score remained 1-1.

Emley were quick out of the blocks in the second half as Kenworthy curled a stunning strike into the top corner from the edge of the box. A third goal followed soon after as Kenworthy squeezed the ball home between the keeper and the post after a Sidebottom free kick.

Kenworthy wrapped up the scoring midway through the second half from close range.

The result moves Emley up to 3rd place in the league behind Tadcaster and Appleby Froddingham who both have maximum points from their 3 games. Emley of course have a game in hand.

AFC Emley v Askern Villa

AFC Emley hope to built on last Wednesdays victory over Hemsworth when they take on Askern Villa in the NCEL Division 1 fixture at the Welfare Ground (Tonight 7.45pm).

Askern have made an excellent start to the season and have taken maximum points in their two league fixtures with victories over Barton and Brighouse.  They did bow out of the league cup last Tuesday evening however with Brighouse gaining a quick revenge by way of a penalty shoot out.

Last season this fixture ended in a very tight 0-0 draw but fans of both sides are more likely to remember Emley’s thrilling 2-3 victory at Askern early last season – the highlight of the game being a stunning strike from Neil Redfern.

Emley’s manager Ian Banks was delighted with the fact that his side had kept a clean sheet his sides 2-0 victory over Hemsworth but has warned against complacency against Askern who are many peoples tip for promotion this season.     “When we went 2-0 up we thought we had done enough and subsequently let Hemsworth have more of the ball than I would have liked.  If we do that tonight against Askern we will be in trouble, they will be in the top 3 at the end of the season, and work very hard for each other and have some match winners in their team”.

Lee Hill, Gavin Armitage and Jordan Kennefick return to the squad but Anthony Leech, Max Joice and Jamie Clayton are unavailable.

Emley Progress In Cup
Emley put in a solid display to beat Hemsworth MW 2-0 to ensure that they progressed past the first round of the NCEL league cup for the first time in their history.

Emley's first came after half an hour when Anthony Leech curled a shot over the Hemsworth Keeper with two Hemsworth defenders on the line captain Steven Kenworthy forced the ball home.

Emleys second came just after the break when Mick Amos who had a solid game partnering Kenworthy up front slotted a beautifully placed shot past the Hemsworth keeper.

An encouranging performance which will set us up nicely for the visit of Askern Villa next week.

Alec followed Emley FC and AFC Emley for many years both home and away and his presence will be missed by his fellow fans, officials and players of the club.

AFC Emley V Hemsworth MW
Emley take on Hemsworth MW in the NCEL league cup tonight at the Welfare Ground.  Emley manager Ian Banks is hoping that Emley can bounce back from their 4-1 defeat at Runcorn on Saturday with a better defensive performance.

Hemsworth come into the game on the back of a heavy 0-6 reversal against Hallam, albeit in a friendly game.

Last season when the two clubs met in the league Emley enjoyed a 1-0 victory at Hemsworth (Andy Farrell was the scorer), this was followed up by a 1-1 draw at home with Steve Kenworthy getting Emleys goal.

Banks keeps faith in his squad from Saturdays game in the hope that they can reproduce the form that brought them a stunning 6 - 3 victory in the opening game of the season against Grimsby Borough.
