GLASSHOUGHTON WELFARE 2 AFC EMLEY 0. FA Vase 1st round- Saturday 22 October 2011
Match Report By Roy Weldrick.
For the second time in 11 days Emley came away from Leeds Road empty handed. This time, however, the seven-goal thriller of the league encounter was replaced by a routine, fairly scrappy 2-0 win for the home team. In spite of a 9th minute reversal, Emley were still in the game until the second goal went in, in the 90th minute.
Emley went into the fixture missing eight first-team regulars, through a mixture of injury, suspension and unavailability, while Glasshoughton similarly had three absentees.
The home team were quickly into their stride with an early shot from Tuck straight at keeper Valente, followed by three corners in quick succession which Emley’s defence struggled to clear. Emley’s Hazelden was then a trifle fortunate to escape a card when hauling down danger man Fothergill. The away side’s first opportunity came in the 7th minute when Ingham played in Armitage, whose shot was pushed away for a corner by Kemp.
Two minutes later Glasshoughton took the lead. A punt forward, which could have been headed back to Valente, was instead headed straight to Fothergill. He took a touch and slammed the ball past Valente, into the corner of the net.
Emley came back with, first Ingham providing a chance for Holt, which the keeper tipped wide and then Wharam getting a shot away after trapping a Holt pass with his chest. Tayo was the first Emley name into the referee’s notebook after a retaliatory push.
Glasshoughton nearly extended their lead in the 19th minute, when Fothergill latched onto a weak headed back pass, but put the ball wide. Heagney was next to threaten for Emley with a snap shot after a quickly-taken throw in. Back again came the home side with full back Smith crashing a 30-yard free kick against the cross bar.
Shortly before half-time Armitage was scythed down twice in three minutes – the first foul resulting in Heagney hitting the free kick just wide from 25 yards and the second resulting in Glasshoughton’s Rian Sykes being the second player to receive a yellow card.
HALF TIME 1-0
After some very scrappy sparring for ten minutes, Emley had a couple of good opportunities when, first, Wharam had a shot blocked and then Heagney’s far-post looping header just cleared the bar.
Just before the hour mark, Emley’s Armitage, who had probably been one of his team’s more effective players, was replaced by newcomer Stirland and the home side replaced Bennett with Young. On 75 minutes came the long-awaited return from injury of Kenworthy for Emley, with Wharam giving way. His first contribution was to be fouled and Dowling’s free kick was too hot for Kemp to hold on to, but no Emley player could profit.
On 81 minutes Fothergill’s last action, before coming off for Bentley, was to smash the ball into the net, but the whistle had already sounded for handball. Horton was Emley’s last substitute – replacing Tayo.
On the 90 minute mark came the decisive second goal when Glasshoughton substitute Young, cut in from the left and slid a pass to the unmarked Radford. His shot was parried by Valente, up and over his head. Young followed up to tap the ball home. Injury time saw two chances fall to his fellow substitute, Bentley- with one pushed away for a corner and the other blazed wide.
Glasshoughton will feel that the result was well-merited, while Emley will be extremely disappointed not to have put more pressure on the home defence.
