AFC Emley 6-1 Yorkshire Amateur. NCEL Division One (06/09/2011)
Emley dealt with the poor weather conditions to deliver their best performance so far this season dispatching of Yorkshire Amateur with an emphatic 6-1 victory. The 85 fans who braved the swirling wind and rain instead of staying at home to watch the England game were rewarded to a fine display of attacking football.
The home side settled into the game quickest playing a passing game mostly on the deck whilst the Y’ammers saw many of their balls over the top lost in the high winds.
In form striker David Heagney again caught the eye for Emley and had the first chance of the game after being played in by strike partner Scott Holt but saw his shot skim just across the face of goal.
Holt might have notched a goal soon but couldn’t apply the vital touch when Mark Townsend had drilled the ball across the face of goal after latching onto a looped ball by John Cyrus.
Thomas Hick had a good chance for the visitors after being tee’d up by Tom Marsden but shot wide before Emley finally made their possession count on the half hour mark.
Jamie Arundel, who celebrated his 17th birthday at the weekend launched in a long “Rory Delap style throw-in from the cricket field side which was touched on by Heagney into the path of Holt to blast home from close range.
Heagney came close from distance before the Emley doubled their advantage on 35 minutes. Arundel was again instrumental, in a more advanced position he surged through the visitors midfield before playing the ball out to the left wing. Gav Armitage picked up the ball and a first time cross into the path of Cyrus who blasted into the roof of the net from 6 yards out.
Holt saw a long range effort dealt with by goalkeeper Daniel Trueman whilst Heagney had an effort cleared off the line after a fine move involving Cyrus and Nathan Tayo as Emley finished the half in dominant fashion.
Emley started the second half in a similar vein with Heagney twice being denied by Trueman. The visitors offered little in response but Daniel Forrest did force a save from Mick Clarke after flicking on a Marsden cross.
Trueman saved well from Cyrus after the midfielder was set up by Armitage and Townsend saw an effort blocked by a defender on the post following some good build up play by Heagney and Holt.
Holt had his second goal of the game on 65 minutes with a fine finish past Trueman after Heagney had beaten the offside trap with fine chipped through ball.
The Amateurs responded as Clarke did well to deny Hick before they grabbed an unlikely goal on 69 minutes. The industrious Marsden was the scorer after breaking through the Emley defence to slot the ball past Clarke.
The revival was shortlived however as Emley stepped up a gear and retained their advantage 2 minutes later. Townsend delivered a dangerous cross into the box which was almost turned in by an Ammers defender but for a good reaction save from Trueman. Scott Holt was alert to the rebound however and slammed home for his first hat trick in Emley colours.
With the visitors defence run ragged Heagney unleashed a terrific low drive past Trueman only to see it come back off the inside of the post. Townsend was well placed to turn in the rebound however making it 5-1 on 74 minutes.
Heagney was finally rewarded for his efforts on 78 minutes tucking the ball home after substitute Curtis Roberts centred from the left wing for him. The front man has now recorded six goals in the last 7 games.
The visitors had chances late on for a further consolation goal but Marsden’s dipping effort went just over and a free kick by Ben Roffe took a deflection off Townsend in the wall to go wide of the target.
This was a convincing display from Emley who simply outplayed their opponents in all departments. Josh Ingham was bossed the midfield particularly in the first half with a string of tackles to win the ball back for his side.
Up front Scott Holt and David Heagney had their best game together as a partnership and whilst Holt will take the headlines for his hat-trick Heagney could easily have matched his tally. Both players are now tied on 6 goals in the club goal scoring charts.
Emley are again without a game this Saturday but entertain Hemsworth in the first round of the league cup next Tuesday evening. Meanwhile the reserves have a home game with Tingley Athletic in the WRCL Division 1 on Friday (7.45pm kick off).
