Emley lose again despite taking early lead
By Martin Eastwood
Pewits' run as miserable as the weather!
AFC Emley's miserable run continued as they were beaten 2-1 by Rossington Main at the Fantastic Media Welfare Ground.
Despite playing in a swirling wind and at times, lashing rain, Emley will once again feel they could have taken points after taking an early 1-0 lead.
It's now 5 defeats in a row for the Pewits and their 6th defeat out of 7 and a result which leaves them far too close to the bottom 2 for comfort, with 15 games left to play, Emley are only 6 points above 2nd from bottom Harworth, as points now become vital.
The game itself wasn't the greatest, aided by some foul weather which made any chance of playing any decent football virtually nil, it was almost impossible to guess what the ball was going to do in the wind which made it hard to do even the basics right at times.
However, a familiar story, Emley started well! in one of few pieces of goalmouth action in the first half, a clear foul inside the box and a penalty was awarded , Dan Stocker stepped up and blasted the penalty down the middle giving Emley a 1-0 lead.
They almost doubled that a couple of minutes later, as Paul Pyke
got through the Rossington backline, the keeper did well to save, the ball fell to George Whittaker
who put the rebound inches wide.
The game then entered a spell where the wind was the only one having any kind of effect and both teams struggled to make headway or even create anything noteworthy, then on 35 minutes, a good ball through midfield by Wayne Hughes
found Shane Hamilton
on the right, with Whittaker and Pyke both in support, Hamilton played in Whittaker, who blasted over, Hughes then headed over from a free kick before the referee brought the first half to a close.
The rain decided to join the swirling winds as the second half got underway to make things even more harder for the players, but it was the visitors who made the early running, a curling shot from just inside the area went wide, and just 2 minutes later, the Main were on level terms, another foul in the area and another penalty awarded, Lee Holmes, like Stocker smashed it down the middle to level up at 1-1
Rossington looked the more dangerous side in attack, with the wind behind them, a shot from about halfway was dealt with by George Clarke
in the Emley nets, but the danger signs about what a swirling wind can do where there.
Emley had their moments though, and created some good opportunites and space but just couldn't find any killer instinct up front
Clarke was called into action again as Rossington looked for a second, a good save from a snap shot and then he saw another shot go wide, but on 80 minutes, he was completely caught out, as with Wayne Hughes
' goal in the last home game, a shot from halfway, caught the wind and sailed into the net, Clarke's attempt to stop were in vain, and despite his protests that he had done enough to keep it out, the linesman who was some yards away confirmed it had gone over the line!
Emley did try and seek an equaliser and Ndiweni, Burnett, Hamilton and Marley Grant
all gave the Rossington defence some problems, but again, couldn't find a way through.
So the game ended with a fairly lucky wind assisted win for Rossington, who pulled themselves clear of the bottom 6, but Emley have some crucial games coming up against teams in and around them now.
